Nudge - As Good As Gone (Kranky, 2009)

The name Nudge chose when they formed in the late 1990s turned out to be prescient. Their first few releases, which dabbled in electronic ambience, heavy-beat IDM, and fractured funk, were too schizophrenic to fit the moniker. But on their fourth album, As Good as Gone, the group sticks to gentle pushes and soft prods– the kind that don't disturb or bruise, but are impossible to ignore. Their sounds approach slowly and rub against each other cautiously. The music is rarely sparse, and often quite full and busy, but there's no jostling for position. Everything interacts carefully, with a tap on the shoulder rather than a shove.

What makes that M.O. so hypnotic is the way Nudge applies it to both structured songs and abstract explorations with equal effectiveness. Beat-less opener "Harmo" collects wafting synths, tinkling percussion, and soaring hums into a thick web. That's followed by the album's tightest cut, "Two Hands", a simmering hymn with dubby bass, jazzy drums, and singer Honey Owens' ethereal musings. Yet there's no tonal conflict between the two tracks. Instead they sound like two sides of a coin, exuding one confident, chilled-out vibe.

Given their pedigree, it figures that Nudge's approach is versatile. Owens comes from the amorphous collective Jackie-O Motherfucker, and records rangy music as Valet. Leader Brian Foote was in the bubbling post-Jessamine ensemble Fontanelle; so was Paul Dickow, aka genre-straddling solo artist Strategy. Mixing together that many creative juices could cause a surplus of ideas that blur or cancel each other out. But no moment on As Good as Gone sounds crowded, and the best tracks build intensity with simple tools. On "Aurolac", minimal beats and Joy Division-esque bass escalate to a climax, while on "Burns Blue" Foote's moans rise like a spirit floating above its body. The band repeats and varies these elements constantly, like characters in a play. It all culminates in epic closer "Dawn Comes Light", a long journey from lonely guitar up to storm-cloud drones.

The only complaint I can imagine being lodged against this album is a stock criticism often thrown at Kranky records-- that its devout commitment to texture and structure makes it more admirable than engaging, more studied than lived-in. In other words, sterile. But such accusations could result only from surface skimming. Dig deep, and the blood coursing through these tracks-- the insistent bass lines, the impulsive percussion, the stirring voices-- is clear. That's why As Good as Gone is Nudge's best album so far, the kind of record that indicates a band has found its signature sound, and is poised to deepen and expand it.

El sonido en el que Eva Saelens escarba cuando graba música como Inca Ore tiene algo imposible de explicar porque es imposible de razonar, de entender. Es música que afecta al oyente desde un plano físico, golpeando el cuerpo. Después de reeditar un split de Inca Ore y Grouper el año pasado, Acuarela presenta en exclusiva mundial Silver Sea Surfer School, el disco menos hermético de Eva Saelens.

No es difícil imaginar a alguien que ve por primera vez un concierto de Inca Ore –una chica cubierta por un extraño velo, retorcida sobre un teclado y murmurando salmos poéticos delante de un micrófono tratado con pedales- soltando un clásico “mi hijo de cuatro años podría hacer eso”, una respuesta generalmente reservada a cuadros de arte abstracto. Sin embargo, una opinión algo más sensible podría ser “mi hijo de cuatro años podría sentir esto” al ver como Eva Saelens se sumerge con sus canciones en todo el terror y la alegría que conlleva la infancia. Saelens ha sido uno de los nombres clave en la escena de Portland desde sus albores, habiendo colaborado con gente como Yellow Swans, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Malibu Falcon, Grouper o Gang Wizard.

Eva vive en Oakland (California), ciudad en la que comenzó a grabar música en solitario bajo el nombre de Inca Ore el día que cumplió 25 años. Y, precisamente, los cumpleaños han sido un tema recurrente en las canciones de Eva desde que comenzó este proyecto. Imaginación y las texturas de su música brillando como un montón de reflejos de ella misma. La substancia de la que parecen hechos sus discos –editados a lo largo de los años por sellos como Weird Forest, Not Not Fun, 5RC, Collective Jyrk, Acuarela o Chocolate Monk- es distintivamente suya por la dimensión impredecible de su personalidad musical y la voluntad de viajar siempre a lugares remotos, vírgenes.

Como Inca Ore, Eva ha desdoblado su sonido con el paso del tiempo: de los estribillos colosales que multiplican su voz, convirtiéndola en un coro, a recitados frágiles; de cascadas de teclados a atmósferas casi macabras, siempre llevadas por el misterio.

En su nuevo álbum, “Silver Sea Surfer School”, las palabras vuelven a ser tan fáciles de distinguir como en el primero de sus discos, “Brute Nature Versus Wild Magic”. Eva pulió estas canciones durante meses de ensayo en su casa y muchas empezaron siendo pequeñas odas a sus vecinos, que podían escucharle cantar. A su alrededor había hermanas preadolescentes, una vidente de sesenta años, una familia vietnamita que solía hacer fiestas de karaoke y una familia china que acaba de llegar a los EEUU.

Las canciones se guiaban por ideas cercanas al gospel, centradas en temas emocionales y espirituales, pero con un contrapunto ingenuo, infantil, y arreglos de juguete. Sus versos encierran claves como las de una amistad eterna, el renacimiento a través del amor o afrontar el ajetreo con el que se nos escapan los días. Existe un disco al que le tengo ganas y no encuentro ningún link, es el Bipolar del Cuarteto de Nos…pese a que ya fue lanzado el disco, la banda se a mandado una lucha antipiratería más dura que Metallica, eliminando los links rápidamente.

Si me pueden conseguir un link les estaré a mil agradecido.
